New! Karen Walker Jewellery, Malmo, Cheap Monday & More! 13 August 2010

HI Everyone,

Just a slightly busy week, what with the new deliveries,
the Valentino opening at GoMA, the Mercedes Brisbane
Fashion Festival and the Valley Laneway Markets.
Luckily, we had the public holiday in between
which helped to catch some time...

Take a peek at this little preview of the Valentino exhibition
on Vogue TV courtesy of Vogue.com.au -

I was struck down with a migraine but dragged my sorry self
out to the Australian Fashion Graduate of the Year Award
as part of the MBFF programme on Tuesday night.
Wild rain couldn't keep away a full house and I loved
their beautiful new white marquis which housed the runway
shows this year - so moderne as Geoffrey J Finch would say.

There were 12 finalists from designs schools around
Australia including Queensland's MSIT and QUT.
The award winner was Christopher Dobosz who is
a graduate from Sydney Institute of Tafe, taking home
a prize of $5000 sponsored by Nandos.
That's a lot of chicken.
How wonderful of them to sponsor such an event
and Nandos obviously have a very forward thinking approach
to their marketing and their support is greatly appreciated.

I had to go straight home, but Matt and Lauren & friends
went on to the State Library for the final in the series of
QUT Fashion After Hours events.
This was a panel discussion on The Current State of
Contemporary Australian Fashion and very special guests were
Susien Chong and Nic Briand from Lover.
Naturally, I was TOTALLY disappointed about missing this one,
which was according to feedback the best and most informative
of the After Hours talks this year.

If you missed the shows at the Fashion Festival, you can click
through the photos here -

After a hugely successful first weekend, the Valley Laneway Markets
continue this and every Sunday in, (surprise, surprise) real and authentic
laneways!
I snapped up some vintage goodies and fought my way through
for a much needed Flamingo coffee in our own Winn Lane which
is right next door to The Outpost.
It's great to see markets that are dedicated to hand-made and vintage
without any of the boring sweatshop stuff.
Here are the website and Facebook links, if you would like to find out more -

Beannie Boy could well be mistaken for an extra in an
Adam and the Ants film clip in those lace-up jeans but we'll let him off
as he looks great in every one of these new CM shirts.
Cheap Monday in-store now at The Outpost.

It's another busy weekend.
Start the evening off tonight at The Outpost, with a musical in-store
performance by Big Strong Brute at 7pm.
The man behind the brute is Paul Donoughue and this interlude
is a preview of his new EP which he will be launching in full at
The Troubadour on August 19th.

Follow this with a stroll up to the (old) Nine Lives Gallery
above Mellinos for an art exhibition that promises
incredible talent and intensity by two returning artists
French (UK) and Murdoch Stafford (Brisbane).

French will then fly on to Sydney for an art exhibition that
has a lot of people VERY excited, as it contains works by
a considerable group of artists of contemporary mind and status.

The Disorder Disorder Exhibition (Ulterior Motives in Contemporary
Art) is being held surprisingly at the Penrith City Gallery and though
I was disappointed that there are no female artists included, the
list is impressive: Stefan Marx, Marcus Oakley, Ed Templeton,
Stephen Powers, Misha Holenbach (PAM), Jonathan Zawada,
Chris Johansson, Ricky Swallow, Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie),
Anthony Lister, Brendan Huntley...and even more!

Matt from The Outpost is flying down to assist the curator
Joseph Allen Shea (Izrock, Monster Children Gallery) during the week.
With all of those boys in Sydney for the week, sounds like Trouble!
Disorder Disorder opens on August 14th and runs to November 14.

Local independent radio station 4ZZZ celebrates 35 years (?!) on air with
a serious of events starting with an exhibition of archival music and station
paraphernalia at the Bleeding Heart Gallery, also tonight, Friday the 13th.
The exhibition is called 2010: A Zed Odyssee and runs until August 20.
Then at midnight, the station launches their annual Radiothon which helps
keep the whole station going.
If you subscribe you can win things!
I still own my Cramps/ A Date With Elvis album from my first ever 4ZZZ
subscription.
So tune in to 102.1fm or go to their website for programme details
to find out what show suits you -

If you like it loose and loud, there's a Burst City benefit show at Burst
on Saturday the 14th with Loose Grip, Gravel Samwidge
and Slug Guts.
Doors open at about 8 with a very affordable cover charge, I am sure.

Come and say hello and check out these latest deliveries!
It's good to finally see them in the flesh instead of a photo.
