I Used To Skate Once 6 + so much more!

Hi Everyone!

I went along to see the new film New York, I Love You
this week and I loved it right back.
Bought to us by the same people that made the memorable
Paris, Je Taime (2006),  the film is a series of short stories that
are meant to capture characters and characteristics of
New York, today.
It felt sexy and voyeuristic, quirky, happy and sad - but not too sad!
Most reviews have said that it doesn't quite stand up to it's
predecessor but I really enjoyed it.

The preview for Sofia Coppolla's new film was released this
week and it looks FAB!
It's called Somewhere and it doesn't release until December
but here is a peek, if you haven't seen it already -

There are a few great indie band gigs on this week.

Tonight, there is show on at Burst City
with Sleepwalks, Peel Street Band, Community
and Sunshine State.
The show runs from 7pm to 11pm, is BYO and only
$5 entry.

Also tonight, is the Nikko CD launch at The Zoo,
with supports Mr Maps, AXXONN and Loomer.
Doors open at 8pm and tickets on the door are $15.

On Saturday night there is another good show on at
Cubbyhole with Kitchen's Floor, Feathers,
Velociraptor and Absolute Boys.
This starts at 9:30 and I think will be one of the last
official Cubbyhole shows at this venue?
Check their facebook page for updates.

Charlotte Rampling in Crush Fanzine

I seem to be obsessed with illustration at the moment and keep coming across
these amazing pieces.
This is an illustration of the gorgeous Charlotte Rampling and is taken from the
latest issue of Crush Fanzine.
I'm not sure who the illustrator is and unfortunately the zine is not available in
Australia but you can check out more about it here...

More on Cedric Rivrain

Cedric's illustrations of iconic ready to wear pieces
left to right: Christopher Kane, Jil Sander and Martin Margiela

My recent talk at the Queensland Art Gallery on the inspiring
headwear of Maison Michel has also left me obsessed with
the illustrations of Cedric Rivrain, who drew their Spring/Summer
2010 campaign.
These drawings above, are a small sample of his "fashion muses"
series and you can see more on his website:

Cedric also posts new work regularly on his facebook page -

I Used To Skate Once 6

I can't believe it's our sixth year!

SALE ON NOW + Provensen + IUSO 6! :::: 11th June 2010

Hi Everyone,

We saw Brisbane band Feathers play
a great show at The Zoo last night.

You may remember them from our Chloe Sevigny Australian Launch
Party, when the girls played inside the store.
Here's what they are up to at the moment -

There has been so much talk about another Brisbane iconic
building biting the dust, The Regent, as developers seem keen
to wipe out any sense of history and character that this young
city has built in it's 150 years.

Thank goodness that there are still some passionate people
out there and I'm referring to the old Dendy Cinemas on
George Street.
They sat idle briefly but are back in business, under the unusual
title of Tribal Theatres.

Naturally, they are mostly showing films, but I went there a couple
of weeks ago when they hosted a live music night featuring,
FeathersHeathen Skulls and an interesting experimental
sounds two piece with Brian Chase (Yeah, Yeah Yeahs) and
Seth Misterka.
It was definitely a New York moment!
Here is a piece that they did at The Cakeshop a few years ago -

This week, I went back to the Tribal to see Banksy's first film,
Exit Through the Giftshop, which was a fascinating
documentary following cult street artists including Banksy himself,
Andre and Space Invader...and more...
I'm not giving any more away.
Just go and see it!

Also did the obligatory girl group bonding and saw
SATC 2 this week.
Ridiculous fantasy with inappropriate costuming - sure.
Uncomfortable, cringy moments including (unnecessary) political and
social messages - yep, sure.

But I enjoyed the escape regardless and would go to see it again.
Carrie's outfits were the pick of the "interesting" assortment and
I loved her guipure lace crown for Stanford's wedding and
her ridiculous raffia hat - for boarding the plane?!

I probably first met Faye about 2 years ago as she works
at one of my favourite vintage stores in Sydney, right near the
hotel that I always stay at.
She kept telling me how she was working on her own shoe collection.
I said, "Yeah sure, I'd love to see them."

I know that she put a lot of effort in to making these just right and yes,
they look amazing.
Cool shoes are hard to find and I haven't seen
anyone doing anything quite like this ANYWHERE!

We had a lot of pre-requests for these, so you will have to be quick
to pick up your size.
Provensen is available exclusively in Queensland at Blonde Venus!

Irene Grishin Selzer studied up to Masters in Ceramics and Applied Arts,
with jewellery as a minor subject.
She launched her label in 2003 combing a collection of distinctive ready to
wear pieces, limited edition and one off art works.

We have been stocking Irene's porcelain delights for 7 years now and I
still love them as much as the first time I layed eyes on them.

We just received another delivery of her petite porcelain pendants like
the Bluebirds, Skull, Anchors, Dogs, Cats, Rabbits and Deer.
The pendants all come on Sterling Silver chain and are priced from $66.

The spectacular vases and miniature skulls are from Irene's
 Limited Edition collection.

Machotail Drop
Australian Movie Premier in Brisbane!

Sometimes Matt has just a little too much, well, ENERGY.
He was lamenting that this amazing looking Canadian film
hadn't made it to our movie screens yet and so...
he just called up the producer and made it happen.

BV's Lauren Clarke was taking an end of semester break in Sydney
on the weekend and happened to catch some of the Vivid Live Festival
which this year has been curated by Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.
So jealous!
Ian Astbury even made a guest appearance with Japanese punk/metal
band Boris.
Vivid is on until June 21st and for programme details, go to:

The 17th annual Sydney Biennale is still on and runs
until the 1st of August.
Lauren made the quick ferry trip to Cockatoo Island which is exhibiting
pieces by 56 Biennale artists and  it's just such a cool spot to visit.
The Biennale programme is huge, diverse and all over Sydney, so for full
details, visit:

Again, if you are in Sydney tonight, you will be able to catch
American singer/songwriter Holly Miranda who is playing
at The Opera House as part of the Vivid Live Festival.

Holly has a bit of a cult following, to say the least.
She's had around 517000 hits on her Myspace!

Luckily she is playing a few shows around Australia
before heading to Europe and we are excited to be
co-presenting her Brisbane performance at The Troubadour
this Sunday night the 6th of June.

In fact, we have 3 x double passes with her new CD to give away!
Just reply by email with Holly Miranda in
the subject matter...
Don't say that I don't love you.

If you're not doing anything on Sunday afternoon,
please come and visit me for a chat at the Hats Exhibition
at the Queensland Art Gallery.
I will be there from 2pm at the Upper Sculpture Courtyard.

Will I see you out tonight?
a) Alex Gillies in a group show at Dogget Street Studios
b) Semiotics / Semi-Permanent After Party at Nine Lives Gallery (SP ticket holders only)
c) Peny Lane 3rd birthday party at Alhambra
d) Mark Seymour at The Troubadour
