New! Lover, Karen Walker Pre-Spring + P.A.M. + Pass Port..

Hi Everyone!

I had the absolute pleasure of going to the opening of the latest
international exhibition at GoMA last Friday night.
Surrealism lives up to it's subtitle of Poetry of Dreams.
What a magical journey.

The big names are there - Picasso, Dali, Miro, Magritte and Pollock but I love
Man Ray and the exhibition includes a lot of his work including photographs,
sculpture, painting and film.

I also love the sultry photographs of Dora Maar and Jacques-Andre Boiffard.
This is quite a dark and sexy exhibition to walk through with it's slatey grey
walls, there is a clever play on shadow which works well with the high focus on
film and photography.

The show is open every day from now until the 2nd of October.

Because I am a BIFF World Cinema Club member, I went to a special preview
of new Australian film Sleeping Beauty at Palace Centro this week.

Starring Emily Browning and under the first time direction of author
Julia Leigh who had the support of Jane Campion on this debut,
this is a strange and surreal film which is certainly not for everyone.
Some reviewers have given it a difficult time due to it's theme
but I have seriously seen weirder story lines on SVU.
Watch the trailer before you go as this may help you decide.
I was intrigued.

The story line is unusual and a little sad but  I loved the cinematography
and I really enjoy this style of cinema in the way it looks, feels
and communicates.
Sleeping Beauty screens at Palace Cinemas and Dendy Portside from 23rd of June.

If you are a cinema fan, join BIFF to find out about new films
and reap the rewards.
I'm going to a preview Tree of Life next week ;)

The finalists have been announced for the prestigious ANDAM award
and they include Adam Kimmel, Anthony Vaccarello, Commuun and my
hot tip favourite, Canadian designer Jeremy Laing.
The prize announced in Paris at the end of June is worth a hefty 200,000 euros
courtesy of France's National Association for the Development of the
Fashion Arts.
Previous winners include Jens Laugesen, Giles Deacon and Gareth Pugh.

From a more mainstream aspect, the American CFDA winners
were announced last week with Proenza Schouler
taking the award for Womenswear Designer of the Year.
CFDA is the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Phoebe Philo was named as International
Designer of the Year for her work with Celine,
Marc Jacobs was presented with the Geoffrey Beene
LIfetime (?) Achievement Award and Lady Gaga
won the Fashion Icon of the Year Award.

Swarovski sponsored the awards for Emerging Talent
which were won by Robert Geller (Menswear),
Eddie Borgo (Accessory Design) and Prabal Gurung
(Womenswear).

Can you believe that we are up to number seven?!
I can still clearly remember the first one (I wore a PAM dress
and Josh Goot came along as he was in town showing his
first collection).

As always, the list of artists is energizing and diverse -
a mix of established artists known for their contemporary
edge along with new names, some of whom have never
shown professionally before.

I am also ecstatic about the bands:
Brisbane singer/songwriter with the voice of an angel and a heart of gold McKisko
New Brisbane band Martyr Privates (Ashleigh Shipton, Sam Dixon and Cameron Hawes) play their second ever show
The Chokes describe themselves as Trash Rock'n'Roll & Tar Pit Surf.
They are dead right and if you like The Cramps, you will love The Chokes.
Flying from Sydney just for this show are one of my favourite Australian bands,
Royal Headache  - they are SO MUCH FUN!

So, hope that you can make it.
I'm still working on the outfit...
