BARBRA WINDSOR-WOO @ "welcome aboard" Brisbane Fashion Week 2009

New Season! Peter Pilotto, Atelier Swarovski and more...

Hi Everyone!

Life is on fast forward at the moment.

Last week, I gave a breakfast talk for the
Design Institute of Australia as part of their
Bubble and Speak Series.
I had to be at Emporium Hotel at 6:15am and you know
me... I'm not a morning girl!
Anyway, I survived and it was a brilliant experience.
The other guest speaker was artist and textile
designer Stewart Russell from Spacecraft in Melbourne,
so it was a very informative morning!

On Saturday we went to Sean and Kellie O'Meara's beautiful
wedding on the river at Bulimba.

By sundown, I was at the Easton Pearson Exhibition opening
at GoMA.
This was a huge party and a show of support for the wonderfully
talented Lydia Pearson and Pam Easton.
It is also fantastic to see fashion celebrated as art - just
as it should be.
It's a stunning exhibition and I thoroughly recommend it,
especially if you are a textile fan.

Sunday was the first day of the Mercedes Brisbane Fashion
Festival and as a show of support, we held our Welcome Aboard
Party, which was a free event at X & Y Bar.

I have been to killer off-sight parties in London and Paris
and Sunday night was definitely on par.
Words can barely explain the fabulous party atmosphere
that exploded.

We encouraged guests to dress-up in the theme which was
Yacht Rock Vs. Disco and I was blown away by the fabulous
outfits and the non-stop dance floor action.

The crowd included lots of young fashion students right
through to VIP visitors Kirstie Clements (Vogue editor in chief),
Damien Woolnough (Vogue On-Line Editor),
David Clarke (Vogue Living Editor), Akira Isogawa (designer),
Suzie Vaughan (QUT), Kellie Alderman (The Sunday Mail Fashion Editor).

A big thanks to our DJ's for the night:
D Black, Polar Bear and Seany B
Also our amazing and enthusiastic performers:
Mark Winmill
Michael Jackson
Barbra Windsor-Woo
And of course, our fantastic hosts at X & Y! xxxx

There have been lots of photo's posted up on some great websites...

On Tuesday night, I spoke at one of the MBFF After Hours Forums
on the subject of Eccentricity, Fashion as Art and
collaborations between Fashion Designers and Artists.
Other panel members that volunteered their time
for the talk included Cath Horton (QUT),
Clare Press (writer/designer), Meghan Carlsen (filmaker/producer)
and Alison Kubler (curator/writer).

On Wednesday night we attended the Australian Fashion Graduate
of the Year Award which showed work from 12 graduates from
Australia's fine fashion institutions.
It was wonderful to see such a great level of design and quality
in our graduates and encouraging for the future of our fashion
industry.
The award was won by Soeli Pedrozo from Sydney TAFE with an
amazing architectural collection of international standard.

After the show, I attended the second After Hours Forum which
was about Collecting and Curating and I was held captive
by the fascinating speakers Roger Leong (curator NGV),
Francis Parker (curator GoMA), Prof Suzi Vaughan (QUT
and Amber Long (Jean Brown).

I was thrilled to meet Roger Leong and hear about some of
the upcoming fashion exhibitions that are happening at the
NGV in Melbourne.
It's always well worth the trip!

The design duo Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos met while
studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
The guys have received international acclaim since their beginning
only two and a half years ago.

In fact, after they had presented their AW08 collection, Style.Com
credited them as on the 10 most promising new talents.

In a season when too many so-so, green, and frankly unprepared young designers have been
jostling for attention on London runways, Peter Pilotto outclassed the lot at a stroke." Sarah Mower (style.com, September 2008)

"Christopher De Vos...... has a genius for draping a dress." Sarah Mower (style.com, September 2008)

The reason for their success is due to the importance of their
shapes and prints and the immediate impact that they have had
on fashion today.

Peter and Christopher are finalists in the prestigious Swiss Textile Awards
which will be announced in November.

This season, Peter's incredible digital print designs are again evolved
from nature in the form of explosive meteorites, volcanos and lava.
Christopher's artful draping and shaping make for sexy, flattering lines -
essentially, killer dresses!
Peter Pilotto is available exclusively in Australia at Blonde Venus!

Atelier Swarovski, London
northern hemisphere AW09 collaboration collections

Australian Exclusive!

Chrisopher Kane for Atelier Swarovski

Jewel Beetle Ring $237
Jewel Beetle Cuff $410

For his fifth Atelier Swarovski collection, the well known Scottish
born designer translated influences from the Pharonic middle-east
into a traditionally Western composition.

Christopher says " I thought that it would be really beautiful to combine
Swarovski crystal with these resin scarabs to create regal-like
jewellery.
I have used Swarovski's large fancy stones with antique-like settings to
give a regal luxurious feel to the collection.
In ancient Egypt the scarabs were revered as sacred and very good
fortune, they were a symbol of creation, resurrection and everlasting
life.
I am so pleased with the results and hope that they bring some good
fortune!"

Philip Crangi for Atelier Swarovski

Hex Baguette Bangle with Jet Crystal $145
Hex Earrings with Jet Crystal $117

Hex Baguette Cuff
available in Jet Crystal $265

New York based jewellery designer Philip Crangi graduated
from the Rhode Island School of Design and was awarded
the 2008 CFDA Award for Accessory Design.

His collection for Atelier Swarovski features sleek Art Deco
inspired hexagonal shapes offset by classic jet into bangles,
cuffs and earrings.

Philip says "I wanted to explore the idea of Dark Glamour -
creating something mysterious and chic that uses the language
of great, important jewellery of the 1930's but reflects the idea of
glamour today".

Anthony Nak for Atelier Swarovski

Ontrato Ring with Montana Blue Crystal $237

Cuff with Montana Blue Crystal $215

Necklace with Montana Blue Crystal $215

Also available:
Otranto Lariat Necklace with Montana Blue Crystal $237
Otranto Long Earrings with Montana Blue Crystal $165

Talented Texan design duo Anthony Carmago and
Nak Armstrong trained in architecture and furniture
design before debuting their first jewellery collection
in 1999.
Since then, they have received universal recognition
and won a CFDA Award for emerging talent in 2005.

Anthony Nak say that their collections are always inspired
by architecture and in this collection for Atelier Swarovski,
by the dramatic and dark moodiness of Gothic buildings
found all over Europe.

Tear shaped Montana blue crystals are bound by twisted
silver strands in rings and cuffs and crystals are suspended
in pendants and necklaces on fine chain.
