New! Dr Denim, Cheap Monday RTW & Woodland! 10/9/2010

Hi Everyone,

This week, the whole of Fortitude Valley was
overrun (more than usual, in the nicest possible way)
by musicians, music fans and music industry people
with Brisbane's answer to South By Southwest,
BIGSOUND, our  music industry summit and
showcase.

The 3 day event completely sold out with national
and international visitors enjoying all sorts of live
performance through the Valley as well as a
heavy weight conference programme.
Make sure that you don't miss out next year -

I joined the World Cinema Club this year
and hence went to a special preview of the new
film starring Charlotte Gainsbourg called
The Tree this week.

This beautiful film closed Cannes this year and was
also shown at the Sydney and Melbourne International
Film Festivals for 2010.

It was largely filmed at Boonah, near Ipswich in
Queensland and captures a special piece of
Australian landscape which I doubt is normally
shown on the big screen and certainly not internationally.

I loved the film (not just because of Charlotte) but wonderful
cinematography and really special performances by the
whole cast.
The Tree opens at Palace and Dendy cinemas on September 30.

Speaking of, you may have wondered what happened to
the Brisbane International Film Festival which is usually
earlier in the year.
It's still happening but not until November 4-14
and you can sign up for details at -

The annual Valley Fiesta is NOW ON  and there's loads
of things you can see and do over the next few days.

Ann Street Party is BACK again tonight!
This is where you can stroll down Ann Street
and take in the sights and sounds of art based
installations and performances in the store windows.
Blonde Venus and The Outpost are both involved
with these events -

Join the handsome and charismatic Charlie Hillhouse at The Outpost
for a Zine Signing of his latest offering which is published by his
own initiative Small House Books.
A big thanks to Chris from Smashing Bottles for his generous sponsorship.
Charlie Hillhouse appearing LIVE TONIGHT at The Outpost from about  6pm.

Join the also very handsome and charismatic Kirin J Callinan with a special in-store
 musical performance at Blonde Venus.
Kirin (Mercy Arms, Fashion Launches Rocket Launches) has just been flying all over the
country supporting Midnight Juggernauts as well as doing his own solo shows.
I always find myself both unnerved and hypnotised by his performances, which are
very much conceptual with beautiful, haunting sounds.
I can't wait.
Kirin J Callinan performing LIVE TONIGHT at Blonde Venus from about 7pm.

As another special event on this Saturday the 11th, Suitcase Rummage
will be setting up shop on Winn Street, right outside
The Outpost so we can enjoy my favourite kind
of shopping - new and old!

The Flamingo Cafe will be spreading their love
with some extra space on the day and it should
all make for a fun and energetic atmosphere.
Hope that you can make it!

Fashion Awards and Mary Katrantzou is a finalist
in the Emerging Talent Award (Ready to Wear).
Mary is up against Meadham Kirchhoff and Michael Van Derham
and the winner will be announce early December.
We should have Mary's latest collection pieces in next week!

Also in the Northern Hemisphere, Stephen Jones just opened another
retrospective exhibition of his work at the MoMA in Antwerp
and for tomorrow calling, New York Fashion Week starts
next week!
Wooooo!

Karen Walker's Perfect Day show is on Tuesday morning  (NY time)

Coming from her own conceptually based independent
label, it must have been strange for Ann-Sofie Back
to move to one of the world's most successful
youth denim brands.
So, to keep true to her origins, Ann-Sofie has created
this limited edition capsule collection for Cheap Monday
called Express.

The collection is only available at 10 retailers within Australia
and New Zealand and it is available exclusively with us
in Queensland!
Even though it is a NH collection, the fabrics are light and
great transeasonal pieces for our climate.

I LOVE Chino Guy!
The revival of the chino has given the modern guy
a little more freedom with his wardrobe choices
and look at the amazing colour line-up.

We have just received another fresh batch including
the standard issue Navy as well as some super springy
colours like this Sky Blue, Powder Blue, Banana Yellow
and Apple Green.

Also, back in stock are their popular unisex Snap Jeans
in Dark Antique and trusty Black.
Dr Denim in-store now at Blonde Venus.

In case you hadn't heard, Woodland is opening this Saturday
night and please come and join me on the dance floor because
I'll will most definitely have my dancing shoes on for this one!

If you have lamented the loss of fun places like Pop Scene,
Super Deluxe, Babble-On, Funkyard, Mass, and even just
upstairs at Rics (how it used to be)...have you got the idea?

The creators are keen to create a cool space, away from
the mainstream crowd which is friendly for people like us.

Woodland will start by opening regularly on Saturday
nights through September and then I'm told there
are lots of special things booked in from October onwards.

Entry is via Coniston Lane which is off McLachlan Street,
between Alhambra and the Sun Apartments.

Live life!
Thea X
