New! A Detacher NY & So Much More!

Hi Everyone!

It's easy to lock oneself in during the colder months
which is really quite crazy considering what an amazing
winter we have.
Oh these spectacular blue sky days.
Sure the nights are a little fresh but we're hardly digging ourselves out
of snow storms so there is really no excuse not to keep yourself busy.

So...I have found some things for us to do.
What do you think?
It's a date!

World Press Photo Exhibition
@ The Powerhouse

Are you ready for the confrontation?
This annual exhibition of photojournalism
has been running internationally for 55 years.
It will travel to 45 countries throughout the year and
is showing now at the Powerhouse until Sunday
the 24th of June and it's free.

Whille you're there, how about a cheeky drink on the deck followed
by a delicious winter dinner at Alto.

There seems to be a lot of talk about all things Indian lately.
Have you seen Bollywood Star currently on SBS?

The film Trishna starring the radiant Freida Pinto is a most beautiful
interpretation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the D'urbervilles
set in India as a modern day love/tragedy.
I love films that take me to a place that I haven't been to before
and this really feels like a journey in to India.
If you've read the book, you will be prepared for the intensity of the tale.
Trishna is currently showing at Palace Centro.
Here's the trailer:

Have you ever seen the Roman Polanski adaptation?
It is a period film which came out in 1979 and stars
the gorgeous Nastassja Kinski as a very seductive Tess.
Here's a preview:

The Winter Festival
Open Air Ice Skating Rink
King George Square

Thank you Sonja (Henie)
I'll do my best, but...

Sure some of the programme looks a bit dorky but I think that's the idea.
Maybe also choose your visiting times carefully so that you're not babysitting!
So put on your cape and mittens, grab your sweetheart and go for a
spin on the ice.
The rink is open from Saturday the 8th until July 1.

After Dark /  Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb
Elizabeth Taylor gives us some hair and make-up tips from her role as Cleopatra.
Stunning!

Sure you can go to the Queensland Museum and see this
incredible collection of Egyptian antiquities that are on loan here
from the British (?) Museum any day of the week but but why
not go at night?
You can take in the show as well as have a drink, get some snacks
and even watch a Boris Karloff film.
Spooky.
The exhibition is on now until August 19.

Cinemateque @ GoMA

Do yourself a HUGE favour and get a copy of the latest
programme for the films showing at the GoMA cinema.

The latest guide runs from now until the end of August
and it is jam packed with a fantastic selection of films including
a series of Australian cinema curated by Margaret Pomeranz in conjunction
with the Contemporary Australian Women exhibition.
You can see films like Looking for Alibrandi, Jucy, Sleeping Beauty
and amazingly,  a Tracy Moffatt Shorts Programme!

Of course, you could become a gallery member and get
all of this information conveniently sent to you...

Save these Dates...

Hola! The Spanish Film Festival opens at Palace Centro
from the 11th of July to the 22nd of July.

Sounds like a "hot" way to spend winter.
I'm thinking that this will involve a few trips
to Ortiga in between - just to get in the mood of course!

Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado

Alonso Sanchez Coello | La infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia Magdalena Ruiz
(The Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia and Magdalena Ruiz) 1585-88 |
Collection: Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid | © Photographic Archive, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

You can keep the whole Spanish thing rolling with the
opening of this exciting exhibition at QAG.
The gallery are also presenting a series of films by cult Spanish
director Pedro Almodovar at the GoMA Cinemateque.
This all starts  on July 21st...

Tex Perkins is back in Brisbane with a return of his famous
tribute to Johnny Cash - The Man in Black.

It's not a hard call because we love Johnny Cash AND
we love Tex Perkins, so...
I missed this show on the last tour but not this time!
There are only 4 performances running over 3 days
on the 13th, 14th and 15th of July.
To buy tickets, go here:

The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour

They aren't playing in Brisbane until Tuesday the 28th of August
at the Entertainment Centre (give us a new venue please!)
but tickets are going on sale now so you will
have to get organized.

I wouldn't say that I am a die hard fan but I did go through an
intense Beach Boys period when I couldn't get enough of
60's surf sounds so it could be fun to see them and experience
that sound on a big scale.

Here's one of my favourite songs God Only Knows...

Delmira Cotton Shift Dress available in Pink Four Dots Print $695

Tess Cotton Blouse with Twisted Sleeve in Pink Four Dots Print $486

New York designer, Mona Kowalska called this collection Grandma's House
and as her show invitation also shows us, she has such an amazing eye.

I love her interesting, arthouse shapes and her kitsch, vintage prints
in clever colour combinations.
What I almost love most about them is that they are 100% cotton.
They look chic and incredibly modern AND they are all in beautiful cotton,
something that sadly is quite hard to find in fashion today
and is so wonderful to have and wear.
A Detacher is available exclusively in Australia at Blonde Venus!

Dr Denim, Sweden

We thought that these weren't coming again until spring but THEY'RE HERE!

They are of course made from their fabulous cotton/elastane denim which feels great
on and also wears extremely well.
